CS304 Discussion Post 1: Reddit
Hey everyone, my name is Maggie and I'm a third-year majoring in communications studies. Social media plays a large part in my everyday life, as I can assume it does for most people. A platform that I find quite compelling, and one that I'm frequently using, would be Reddit. This is a platform that I got into this past summer when I was working on solving the book Cain's Jawbone. Through Reddit, I was able to find a series of communities that discussed the book and different ways to approach it. I found one community specifically that I frequently visited and found it to be very helpful with my progression in solving the novel. From there I started looking at other communities where users posted stories or events that happened in their lives and asked the other users for advice or opinions regarding it. I now browse the app frequently readings through the posts in specific communities (such as the 'suggest me a book' and 'ask reddit' communities) and keeping updated on the variety of stories/ posts I find interesting. This app is very compelling to me as I enjoy the sense of community it presents with everyone being open about their personal stories, along with the inclusivity it brings by helping others and giving advice.
With that, I have found in the past few months these stories have translated onto another platform I frequently use, which is TikTok. I find myself often watching videos through the TikTok platform that re-post stories from these Reddit communities with someone narrating the story.
Reddit has become one of my most used apps, and with me still working on solving the novel, I find the 'Cain's Jawbone' community to be the one I interact with the most. Do you use the Reddit platform? If so, are there any specific communities or subreddits that you find interesting to browse through or interact with?
I have attached the link below in case anyone wants to check it out!

Hi Maggie! I was gravitated toward your post since I have never used Reddit before. I found it interesting to learn about the various communities in your post and the sense of openness throughout the platform. I had a small idea that Reddit was a sort of group chatting site, but had actually heard of the platform through TikTok in the same way that you mentioned, through the reactions to, and the re-telling of stories. In the blog, Taylor made a post about “The integration of TikTok’s format on other popular platforms.” This made me think, has reddit adapted to the formatting style of TikTok in any way to draw more users? Do you think they will in the future if their content is already being popularly shared across TikTok as you mentioned? Overall great post and enjoyed reading!
