CS304 Blog Post 1-- Icebreaker.

Hello everyone. My name is Justin Couto and I am a fourth year communications student. I am a really big hockey fan and specifically my Toronto Maple Leafs. At times I feel almost as if I am apart of the team myself because of the range of emotions the team puts me through over the course of the season. Over the last year I have discovered a hockey podcast called 'Spittin Chiclets'. Made up of 2 former NHL players, Ryan Whitney and Paul Bissonnette as well as a few others, this group talks not only about what is going on currently in the league, but they also share some of the best and funniest stories from their careers. The podcast also features many different celebrity guests who are not hockey players such as Jon Hamm, star in the show Mad Men. The fun stories that they share about moments in their careers is what continuously brings me back to the podcast. They do not only talk about hockey, they also talk about what it is like being a professional athlete. Many times have I literally laughed out loud while listening and so if you are a fan of hockey and podcasts you should 100% check it out. The podcast can be found on services like Spotify and YouTube, but they also share numerous clips from the podcast on their Instagram and Twitter pages.

I love listening to them talk about hockey and have such a fun time doing so. They remind me of how me and my friends talk about sports, and how every argument ends in a bet being made. It is because of this level of connection and relatedness that this podcast has become a staple on my social media.

  1. Hi Justin, my boyfriend is a big fan of the spittin chiclets podcast as well, so I had listened to a few of their podcasts before and enjoyed them. That being said, I believe podcasts are excellent and encourage people to listen to them! I think podcasts are a popular technology form that has many beneficial uses, like learning information and providing entertainment. For example, I particularly love them when I go for a walk or have a long car ride so I can listen yet still be able to do other things. The nice thing about the spittin chiclets is that they also have the video component, which you listed, that gives you the visual aspect/ option to put a face of the voice that some podcasts don't have.

  2. Hi Justin, I am also a big hockey (and leafs) fan as I grew up playing competitive hockey up until before I came to Laurier. I've heard a couple of Spittin Chiclets' episodes and I too found them quite funny and entertaining all while bringing you back to the sport. I've noticed in recent years podcasts have become a lot more popular and I think that's because it's not like TV where you necessarily need to be looking at a screen to be entertained. A lot of my friends that listen to podcasts often say that they listen to them when they are commuting or even going on walks. I think Spittin Chiclets does a great job at bringing a new variety of content to the hockey community without individuals necessarily having to watch highlights or the actual games. Great post!

  3. Hello Justin, I found myself chuckling while reading your post as I too (unfortunately) am a massive leafs fan. I enjoy listening to the spittin chiclets podcast as I find it gives a unique insight into the game of hockey that no other podcast can give. I also find the two hosts of the show to be pretty hilarious as well. I find it very interesting that a podcast can turn into a series of live shows played across North America, just goes to show the capabilities of a social media audience.

  4. Hey Justin! Great post. Love Chicklets and how they have grown hockey culture outside of the game. I too laugh out loud at Biz and Whit's antic's there is a real gueine rawness to the stories they tell both the funny ones and the serious. But it how you write about your listening expierence that made me chuckle :). They take you inside hockey in a hilaourious and true to form what's it is like to be around hockey player's. I honestly believe some of the best moments are on serious topics, providing really important example's of the good and bad hockey culture. It always feels like their just regular guy's which you do not see much is the media landscape. I did not know how to @ you to my post but I gave you and your post a shoutout for inspiring me, "Not a big deal" ;)
