CS 304 Blog #1 - Finding your online community.


 My name is Zach Tyrrell and I am a third year student majoring in communications (as most, if not all of you are). The platform that I find incredibly interesting is Reddit. In case you aren't familiar with Reddit it is a platform that is made up of millions of "subreddits" that each serves a specific purpose in relation to a specific community. The beauty of Reddit is that you can discuss your topics of interest with others around the world. For example, as a big sports fan I am able to go to the subreddits of my favourite teams. After a big game or breaking news I can visit the subreddit and see what other people have to say. I can make a post myself or interact with others via the comments. In addition you can upvote a post and the more upvotes a post has the more people will see it. 

Reddit was not a platform I used until the start of my University career. It has slowly become one of my favourite platforms to use because I enjoy interacting with others who share my interests. Other social media platforms cater their algorithm to what you engage with but none are as specific as subreddit. Whether you're interested in sports, fashion, movies or TV you can find a subreddit community that you will want to actively engage with.

    Hello Zach! I really enjoyed reading your first blog post. I too enjoy reddit and the sense of community it can offer. I am no stranger to laughing out loud at some of the comments made on my favourite subreddit, the r/leafs page, where I am unfortunately drawn to at this time of year every year. I am interested to know what your favourite or most interacted with subreddit would be?From the looks of it you are active on the Blue Jays subreddit, we are certainly in for an entertaining few weeks on there, playoff baseball always brings excitement. I also find the platform to have such a wide array of opinion, for example, on any post relating to Canadian politics there is sure to be multiple viewpoints and some pretty highly combative discourse which I am always entertained to read. Thanks for sharing this post with us all!

The Freedom Convoy as Hot or Cool Media / Zach Tyrrell

A prominent idea in Marshall McLuhan’s 1964 book Understanding Media is looking at media as either hot or cold. Hot media demands a viewer's attention whereas cold media requires conscious participation by the medium’s consumer. Examples of hot media include; photographs, print, and radio. On the contrary cold media includes the; telephone, seminars and television. To reiterate, the differentiating factor between the two is audience involvement.  The freedom convoy took the nation by storm in early 2022. As most of you probably know, the freedom convoy was a nationwide protest against the vaccine mandate instituted by Trudeau’s government. The convoy made its way to Ottawa as hundreds protested outside of the Parliament building for a number of weeks. So, is the freedom convoy hot or cold media? Hi everyone!  Before I answer this week’s blog prompt, I want to establish a few key points of McLuhan’s medium theory in order to predict how he would interpret social media as a communicative medium. As we have discussed in our class, McLuhan’s approach to interpreting different media forms focuses on how they construct a social environment that can vary the meaning and sense of the information that is being communicated. Particularly, McLuhan explains that a medium can be seen as an extension of our human senses. This causes different media to favour certain senses which influences how we interpret meaning within the barriers of that sense. For example, since radio privileges the sense of hearing, this then causes receivers of its message to perceive its message within the limitations of hearing. Thus, this idea of media as an extension of human senses has certain implications regarding how different media can shape our social environments and cultural communicative practices....
